Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) And Why It Matters!

CUI (Controlled Unclassified Information) with image of gears, unlocked padlock, and information icon.

As we all do our daily jobs in an ever-changing work environment, it’s important to safeguard NASA’s information.

Established by Executive Order 13556 [PDF], and implemented by 32 CFR part 2002, the CUI Program is now being implemented across NASA and all Executive Branch agencies and departments. The goal of the new CUI program is to standardize how sensitive information is marked, handled and shared, while ensuring the information remains appropriately protected.

Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) is information that requires safeguarding or dissemination controls pursuant to and consistent with applicable law, regulations, and government-wide policies but is not classified under Executive Order 13526 or the Atomic Energy Act, as amended.
